With another month coming to a close, the holidays around the corner, and the year coming to an end in a few short months I got to get it together! I’ve been actively reflecting, and shifting my time, energy and focus. Y’all, 2023 I have been in a place of growth, and really letting go of old, warn out narratives. These days my eyes and ears are open, so I can get inspired by a thought, a book, a sermon, or an Instagram clip.
This month I am bringing to you a word I got through Instagram, it’s a good one though! One faithful day I was scrolling on Instagram, as we humans do and I came across the concept of the Misogi Challenge, and as I was listening to Jesse Itzler speak I instantly had a recap in my mind of my year so far. Let me rewind, in short, the Misogi Challenge has a few key pieces:
One big accomplishment for the year (start a podcast, quit a unhealthy habit)
Every other month do something new (visit a new place, do a new activity)
Every quarter add in one new thing to your routine
What drew me to this concept is that adhering to these things keeps me learning, enjoying new experiences, and growing. With each experience I am consistently adding value to my life, and I like this for me!
I have not completed my one big accomplishment for the year, but I have a few months left to do something big. I’m not exactly sure what I am going to do just yet, but I have 3 months to figure it out. Last year my big thing was buying a brand-new car for myself, and the year before that was starting my blog. So, it will be interesting to see what I do before the year is up! Pressure!!
For me trying something new every other month this year consisted of: watching a semi contact sparring competition (met some cool and talented people), went to a paint and sip class, attended a calligraphy workshop, and went to a polaroid workshop at the Long Beach Museum Of Latin Art. Definitely things I have not done before, and I have two more new things to add to this year’s list before the year is up (either visiting a new place or having a new experience).
For adding in something new to my routine every quarter: I read every other day, if not every day in the morning. I attend a hip-hop dance class every week, and after I complete five classes I take a week off in between starting the next set of classes. Lastly, I do a Duolingo lesson every day, and rarely do I miss a day. With my calculations, I have one more thing I need to add to my routine before the year is up. If you have any suggestions let me know, and if not I’ll marinate on what to add to my routine!
The Misogi Challenge will continue to be incorporated into my life because I enjoy new experiences, I love to learn, and I like trying out new activities. Interesting enough, I feel that the Misogi Challenge is like having an accountability partner that keeps you growing, learning, and challenging yourself. I am so looking forward to seeing what new experiences and activities I add to my life before this year is up!
If you try this challenge out let me know how it has shaped your life.
Keep growing, believe in yourself, and really live life!
Love,
Gabrielle
